About 15 percent of the U.S. population — that’s roughly 43 million people — rely on private wells to get their water.

If you’re one of them, then you probably know how the system works.

But you also know that it’s not perfect, and your well has started to cause you a few problems.

Namely, you’ve noticed that you have well water sputtering out of the pump or even out of your house’s taps.

Why is this happening, and how can you fix it?

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Am I Having Well Water Sputtering?

Let’s say you’ve turned on your tap, and the water spits out of the faucet.

It might sputter like this momentarily, then flow normally.

Or, perhaps it continues flying out of the pipe in a very forceful fashion.

Either way, your water is sputtering, and you want to understand why.

This happens when there’s air in your well system.

Now, there are two ways that air gets into your well.

You either have a break in the tube just above your pump.

Or, your pump has started to malfunction and let air in — clearly, it shouldn’t be doing this.

What’s the Next Step to Fix It?

Unfortunately, a sputtering faucet — and air-filled well system — isn’t something that you can fix by yourself.

You’ll have to bring in a certified contractor to inspect your pump to see what’s happening.

In most cases, they will have to fully remove the pump to diagnose the problem.

Obviously, this isn’t a task you can DIY — it requires an expert well pump contractor to analyze your current setup and figure out why it continues to sputter.

The same goes for other common well-related problems.

For example, you might have water that has started to taste bad.

You can’t tell if the problem is that sand and silt have gotten into your pipes — or something a bit more dangerous.

Bacteria can get into your well, as well.

Most of it is harmless, but it is worth having a pro come out and check it.

The same goes for cloudy water, high utility bills, or even a well that appears to have run dry — a professional can easily figure out what’s going on and give you peace of mind.
